Under its alternative name of "wintergreen oil", methyl salicylate is a common additive to North American rubbing alcohol products. In Ireland and the UK, the comparable preparation is surgical spirit B.P., which the British Pharmacopoeia defines as 95% methylated spirit, 2.5% castor oil, 2% diethyl phthalate, and 0.5% methyl salicylate. The United States Pharmacopeia ( USP) defines "isopropyl rubbing alcohol USP" as containing approximately 70 percent alcohol by volume of pure isopropyl alcohol and defines "rubbing alcohol USP" as containing approximately 70 percent by volume of denatured alcohol. The term "rubbing alcohol" in North American English is a general term for either isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) or ethyl alcohol (ethanol) products. They also have multiple industrial and household applications. They are liquids used primarily as a topical antiseptic. Rubbing alcohol is denatured and undrinkable even if it is ethanol-based, due to the bitterants added. The comparable British Pharmacopoeia ( BP) is surgical spirit. Rubbing alcohol is either an isopropyl alcohol or an ethanol-based liquid, with isopropyl alcohol products being the most widely available. For the sitcom, see Surgical Spirit (TV series). My limited experience reveals that at least in Europe, they tend to speak of the alcohols more precisely, and a reference to - ethanol may get a quicker response."Surgical spirit" redirects here. I would think that in other areas of the world a quick visit to a paint store would reveal the local equivalent. The point being that outside the United States, while I do not know this for a fact, the term "denatured alcohol" might not be used. The only practical way to separate the ethanol is to redistill it (which is itself an illegal act in the United States) with close attention to the distillation temperatures. There is an old legend, what we would now call an "urban myth", that denatured alcohol can be made safe to drink by filtering it through a loaf of bread. So another alcohol is the most commmon denaturing chemical as it goes into solution in ethanol and cannot be chemically separated (at least not easily), and the cheapest of these is methanol (wood alcohol). The denaturing agent has to meet three basic requirements in addition to being basically poisonous: it has to be incapable of being mechancially removed (straining), and it has to be incapable of being chemically removed and it has to make the end product unpalatable to emphasize that it is not for drinking. government requires that it be "denatured", made unfit for human consumption. To prevent the ingestion of alcohol intended for industrial use, the U.S. government regulation.Įthyl Alcohol, a/k/a ethanol, a/ka vodka, a/k/a hooch, is obviously an important organic solvent. ![]() Include your actual First and Last name and a correct email address when registeringĭenatured alcohol is a product of U.S. Registration is now required in order to post.
